Basic Training is a lifesaver!
She roams at ease on the quiet streets of Carlton....
The shame of backyard breeders and puppy mills!
A small sampling of the more than 1,000 faces rescued through the years....
This is an acceptable facet of "rural culture?" Surely not! Warning: disturbing photo

How many surrendered pets are in the pound, destined for euthanasia, not because they are unadoptable, but rather, because their pet parents never taught them basic obedience.

Huts for Mutts residents are lucky enough to have available the services of Mary Sealy, a certifed dog trainer.  Mary has long emphasized the need to standardize "behavior" we expect from all our dogs.  Together, feeders and volunteers are expected to react with indifference (turn away and show no reaction*) when the dogs jump up...a number one turn off when it comes to adoptor/dog interaction.  With Mary's gentle approach to training we are all learning something new...not just the dogs!

*By not reacting to the dog's jumping up (a bid for attention) the person is emphasizing (to the dog) the futility of that particular behavior when it comes to asking for attention.

Richard Auto found his family at Petsmart April 5th, 2008.

Richard Auto was such a cutie pie!  You can see it in his face.  He needed no behavioral adjustments...however....

You would think these people would be embarrassed to say "we don't know how it happened" duh! somehow the dog got pregnant.

~Ah, sweet mystery of life at last I've found you!~

Many of these unplanned pregnancies result in pups desperate for socialization.  These unwanted litters usually parallel "no time to work with" and "cannot find homes for."

Spay/neuter would have prevented the problem.

Under Mary's direction college students at Tarleton University in Stephenville, Texas come to Huts for Mutts to work with those dogs in need of sharpened social skills to make them more adoptable.
