Basic Training is a lifesaver!
She roams at ease on the quiet streets of Carlton....
The shame of backyard breeders and puppy mills!
A small sampling of the more than 1,000 faces rescued through the years....
This is an acceptable facet of "rural culture?" Surely not! Warning: disturbing photo

In 2011 Huts for Mutts goal is to get our long-time residents adopted!  Already our darling Buzz who has been with us for 3 years has been adopted into the most wonderful home in the world!!!!  We wish we could clone the Morgans and offer each of our "kids" a forever home like the one Buzz in now a part of!

Stay tuned for photos and updates...Buzz hadn't been part of an inside "family" at any time in his life past puppyhood.  Once he grew out of the cute and cuddly stage he was consigned to a small outside pen with little interaction except at feeding time.

We were concerned about his acceptance of the Morgan's cat...as you can see...their buds!

Stay tuned for more about Buzz's progress!

Our first mobile neuter project was to participate in a SpayDay nickel neuter for tom cats offered in Dallas back in 2005.  The two hour drive on a cold February day taught us that no good deed goes unpunished.  Boy did it stink in that vehicle!  Too pungent to keep the windows rolled up and too cold to roll them down!  But in the end 20+ male toms would no longer be adding to the pet overpopulation problem in Hamilton.

Sammy is my personal rescue~

The Starfish Story

Walking along the beach after a storm
the couple noticed someone in the distance
bending down and throwing something into the ocean
again and again the person would walk along the water's edge
bending down and casting something into the water
Soon they could see the person was throwing stranded starfish
into the safety of their "home" the ocean
The couple asked if the effort really mattered
there were so many starfish washed up on the shore
The individual picked up a starfish and threw it into the ocean replying,
"IT MATTERS TO THIS ONE."

Never let the nay-sayers have the last word!
Rescue matters!

Spotted walking up the dirt road in front of Esther's home, the Sulcata tortoise was herded into the yard and penned in a temporary enclosure to keep it safe.  An alert went out on the Huts for Mutts e-mail loop (and the local newspaper) and the appreciative owners reclaimed their missing family member.  Not native to Texas the tortoise resides in a large fenced yard (uh-oh, someone left the gate open(!) and enjoys a heated shelter in the winter~

A Hut for Mutts volunteer spotted this cockatiel in a bank parking lot dehydrated and over-heated.  "Mickey" (who became Michalena when she laid an egg) has been the official HFM greeter ever since and moved from a bird cage to a huge 2-story ferret cage along with 3 recently relinquished cockatiels.

Hootie was spotted entangled in a barbwire fence.  Seeing nothing but a pile of feathers hanging on a fence, our volunteer U-turned and drove back to verify the bird was dead...but when Hoot opened his eyes the race was on to free him!  Hamilton Sheriff's dept. sent a deputy who called the Texas Wildlife Dept.  Hootie suffered damage to his wing and had to be rehabed by The Phoenix Center, a federally recognized raptor rehab center in Glen Rose Texas.  LOWER:  Hootie being released on Elsie Mayfield's property where he was originally rescued.
